Pollen Type Details
Alder is one of the earliest flowering trees and affects allergy sufferers as early as January. Alders prefer damp areas along rivers and lakes. Their pollen can travel long distances on the wind.
Season: Jan–Apr · Peak: Feb–Mar
Birch is one of the strongest allergy triggers in Austria. Birch pollen is particularly aggressive and can cause symptoms even in small amounts. Cross-reactions with foods are common.
Season: Mar–May · Peak: Apr–Apr
Grass pollen is the most common cause of hay fever in Austria. The season runs from April to September, peaking between May and July. Grasses grow almost everywhere — in meadows, gardens and along roadsides.
Season: Apr–Sep · Peak: May–Jul
Mugwort flowers in high and late summer. As a member of the daisy family, it is one of the strongest allergens among herbs. Cross-reactions with celery, carrot and spices are known (celery-mugwort-spice syndrome).
Season: Jul–Sep · Peak: Jul–Aug
Ragweed (Ambrosia) is a weed introduced from North America that is increasingly spreading in Austria. Even a few pollen grains can trigger strong allergic reactions. Climate change is extending its pollen season.
Season: Jul–Oct · Peak: Aug–Sep
Together with alder, hazel is the earliest pollen source of the year. The first hazel pollen can appear as early as January during mild weather. Cross-reactions with birch pollen and hazelnuts are common.
Season: Jan–Mar · Peak: Feb–Feb
Ash flowers at the same time as birch and is often underestimated. As a relative of the olive tree, it shows cross-reactions with olive pollen. Ash is common throughout Austria.
Season: Mar–May · Peak: Apr–Apr
Rye is the strongest allergen among cereal pollens. Its flowering period falls in early summer and overlaps with the grass pollen season. Rye fields are found mainly in rural areas of eastern Austria.
Season: May–Jul · Peak: May–Jun
